My story : A Journey of Resilience

After being diagnosed with learning disabilities and behavioral challenges, I spent much of my youth moving through the juvenile justice system, mental health services, and the school-to-prison pipeline. During my last incarceration, I had a life-changing encounter with a jailhouse drug counselor whose words sparked something deeper in me: a commitment to break the cycle of recidivism through education, growth, and community leadership.

After my release, I set out to earn my GED through the Cape Fear Literacy Council. Once I passed the math portion of the exam, I threw myself into community service and enrolled at Cape Fear Community College. There, I earned academic honors, held several leadership roles on campus, and was honored with the Dallas Herring Achievement Award, selected by community college presidents across the state. I later transferred to the University of North Carolina Wilmington, where I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminology.

While in college, I began my journey as a helping professional with the Blue Ribbon Commission to Prevent Youth Violence and served as an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer for Quality Enhancement for Non-Profits. These experiences opened doors to meaningful opportunities with respected nonprofit and private sector organizations across the Carolinas, while also allowing me to speak to audiences nationwide.

Today, I serve as an Outreach Specialist with a justice services and harm reduction-focused nonprofit organization. I am also the Founder and CEO of Jumoke Support Services, a training and development firm centered on reentry, recovery, and personal transformation. I am a North Carolina Certified Peer Support Specialist, Community Health Worker, and Drug & Alcohol Counselor, as well as a Leadership Wilmington alumnus.

I highly recommend Mr. Jamir Jumoke as a conference speaker. His story is one of a kind, detailing events of his life and how he overcame insurmountable odds and turned his past into his purpose. He was a very engaging and outstanding presenter at our Education K.E.Y.S. to Success conference (Knowledge Empowers Youth to Succeed) embedding humor while being honest and vulnerable when telling his story. Our staff was so engaged and hanging on his every word!!
